Module 5

Self-awareness and self-reflection are among the key drivers for achieving goals in all professional aspects, including mentoring but often individuals find it difficult as it is time-consuming and sometimes can be frustrating. This session will focus on practical ways of enhancing professional and personal self-awareness which breeds success in mentoring relationship. 


By the end of this session, you will learn:

  • To understand the role of mindfulness and self-reflection as a crucial factor of ethical and effective mentoring 

  • To understand how to avoid mentor’s burnout 

  • How to appreciate and practice diversity and inclusion

Ellen Pengelly

Imperial College London


Summary

Ellen has over 35 years’ experience in IT and technology. With a degree and PhD in mathematics, Ellen started her career working on sonar systems, and via a variety of steps, moved to international consulting where she headed a large consulting practice. Ellen now works at Imperial College London, an organisation she describes as a wonderful place to work for women in STEM. With long experience in mentoring, Ellen is keen to promote the cause of women, recognising though, that we must first remove the barriers within us. In her spare time Ellen enjoys time with her family along with science, music, painting, photography (semi-professionally), running and chess (she is a member of an international women’s team).
